Costs and timing
How much does probate cost and how long does it take?
Separate the court fee, the cost of professional help and the time needed to finish the estate. They are different parts of the process.
The court application fee
At 15 September 2026, the probate application fee is £526 where the estate exceeds £5,000. There is no application fee for an estate worth £5,000 or less. Extra grant copies ordered with the application cost £2 each; additional copies requested afterwards cost £16 each.
Help with Fees may be available according to income, savings and benefits. Check the current HMCTS instructions, including the different process for online and postal applications.
The time to obtain the grant
GOV.UK currently says probate is usually issued within 12 weeks of submitting the application, with longer waits where more information is needed. Paper applications generally take longer. This is guidance, not a guaranteed completion date.
Valuing assets, obtaining tax information and dealing with HMRC can happen before the probate application is ready. A grant does not mean that property has been sold, all debts paid or every beneficiary paid.
Comparing solicitors’ quotations
Ask whether a quotation covers the grant only or the whole administration. Check VAT, expenses, property work, tax returns, estate accounts and any work excluded. Ask what happens if the estate turns out to be more complex, and when payment will be due.
A clear written scope helps you compare quotations for the same work. If you need only a particular task handled, say so when seeking a quotation.
